WHY THIS BOOK?
Computer-aided design (CAD) is the future of the design and manufacturing industry and understanding the basics of it is essential for anybody with ambitions for a career in product design and manufacturing – or for anyone curious about the subject and keen to learn more.
As advances in computing take a firmer grip on design and manufacturing processes concepts such as 3D design and printing are increasingly expected by clients who want to be able to see and handle their prototype rather than just look at it on a screen or a sheet of paper.
3D printing allows for far more accurate designs and ensures that there are no surprises when you come to manufacture or build as the relationships between the various measurements have already been tested and verified to ensure they work together.
This has been a huge step forward in the world of product design and has helped to make the manufacturing process quicker and more cost-effective than ever before. If you’ve ever wondered, ‘How do I get into the design industry?’ or ‘What qualifications do I need for a career in CAD?’ then this is the book for you.
NOTE: This book is available only online as the company aims to go paperless. CAD FM recommends you do not print any part of this book unless absolutely necessary.
WHO IS THIS BOOK FOR?
In this, the most comprehensive beginners guide to CAD, Dr Farrukh Makhdum PhD introduces the most important aspects of computer-aided drafting and design to those new to the topic in clear, concise language which is easy to understand.
The book is aimed at those with little or no prior knowledge of CAD or even design and manufacturing in general but who want to understand CAD and computer-aided design software.
Starting with what CAD is, how it came into being and some of its current uses, Dr Makhdum goes on to look in more depth at some of the nuances of computer-aided design, anticipated developments and what the future might look like for the industry and those working in it.
The book is suitable for people with an interest in CAD as a hobby but is primarily aimed at those seeking a CAD career so Dr Makhdum also discusses some of the ways into the industry, the different roles available, skills required and what salary you can expect to command in the UK and US for some of the most popular computer-aided design jobs.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Dr Makhdum is an experienced engineer with over 15 years of industrial experience. He has written extensively on the subject and is regularly cited in magazines and academic writing on CAD and on other forms of design, manufacturing and engineering.
Since 2016 Dr Makhdum has been the CEO of CAD FM, a company of his own creation based in Glasgow and seeking to serve the community by supporting those less-fortunate or who face barriers to training and career progression.
Through its C-VAP programme, CAD FM seeks to assist them to learn a new skill and to help to plug the gap in the market for designers, manufacturers and other roles involving skills and knowledge in CAD which currently exists.
Full of easy to understand instructions and guidance as well as diagrams to help further explain the ideas discussed, The Beginners Guide to a CAD Career is essential background reading for anybody considering a role in the industry and will no doubt prove to be a book that they come back to time and time again even as their knowledge grows and their CAD career progresses.
